Botox 101: Everything You Need To Know About Botox

What is Botox?

Botox is a drug doctor have been using for years to treat wrinkles and facial creases. Botox is a brand name of a toxin made by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum.

You may be surprised to know that many of our patients come to us during their lunch break for BOTOX injections. This is because the procedure typically takes only 30minutes, we can have you in, out and back to your office in about an hour.

Botox Treatment Areas

As we age, our skin begins to lose its elasticity and vitality, resulting in lines, wrinkles and folds. Dynamic lines are the lines that are caused by repeated facial expressions, e.g. smiling, frowning and squinting.

A tiny injection of Botox in just the right place weakens the muscle, allowing it to relax, and removes and reduces the appearance of the wrinkle.

Botox Treatment for other conditions

Botox has been primarily used as a cosmetic treatment for wrinkles and lines on the face. However, it has other medically therapeutic uses as well.

Excessive sweating (Hyperhidrosis)
Botox is an effective treatment for focal hyperhidrosis. Botox injections use botulinum toxin to block the nerve signals responsible for sweating, stopping the sweat glands from producing too much sweat.

Chronic Migraine
Botulinum toxin treatments have been proven effective in treating migraines. When a person has a migraine, their body releases substances called neurotransmitters and molecules that are associated with pain. Botulinum toxin interferes with the transmission of these substances, typically where the nerves and muscles meet to reduce the frequency of migraines.

Teeth Grinding/Clenching (Bruxism)

Small doses of botulinum toxin (Botox) is injected directly into the masseter muscle (the large muscle that moves the jaw); the muscle would be weakened enough to stop involuntary grinding of the teeth and clenching of the jaw. It significantly relaxes the muscle and reduces the wear and tear on the teeth due to grinding. 

Botox For Depression?

You have probably heard about Botox and its use in aesthetic/cosmetic procedures. However, did you know that new research suggests that Botox may be an effective treatment for depression?

Based on studies done by researchers of University of California San Diego, it’s been found that patients who received Botox were between 40 and 80 per cent less likely to report depression. This finding offers hope to researchers, therapists and patients who suffer from depression.

How Is a Botox Procedure Done?

Before the procedure
It’s best to avoid alcohol starting at least 1 week before the procedure. Patients should also stop taking aspirin and anti-inflammatory medications 2 weeks before treatment to help prevent bruising.

During the procedure
Getting Botox takes only a few minutes. Numbing cream is applied to reduce the discomfort during injection. Our professional doctors use a small needle to inject Botox into specific muscles with only minor discomfort and minimal downtime. The number of injections needed depends on many factors, including the extent of the area being treated.

After the procedure
Avoid rubbing or massaging the treated areas for 24 hours to prevent the toxin from spreading to a different area. Patients are advised to stay upright for 4 hours after the shots and to take a day off from exercising. Other than that, patients can resume their normal activities right after the procedure.

Results

Botox injections usually begin working one to three days after treatment. It generally takes seven to 14 days to take full effect. Depending on the problem/area being treated, the effect may last three to six months or longer. It is ideal to have regular follow-up injections to maintain the effect.
